Family Fun in New York
Fun-loving family in the big city! Spend the day walking the Central Park and see the shining lights in a Broadway Musical.
Our trip to New York started with a purchase of Broadway tickets. Julia desperately wanted to
see a musical and tickets were available during the Spring break… so… we purchased the
tickets to see the musical and started planning our trip.
Our Itinerary
We created a list of attractions that we wanted to visit:
-
One World observatory
- 9/11 memorial museum
- Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island (4 hours)
- Museum of Modern Art (some days have free attendance, check with the museum)
- Metropolitan Museum of Art
- The Guggenheim Museum
- The Frick Collection
- Empire State Building
- Top of the rock observation deck (additional fee to go during sunset, we didn’t do that, but it was recommended)
- The Oculus (you have to pay the fee in order to climb it, otherwise really fun to see)
- Take Staten Island Ferry
Other Activities
Along with the museums and other paid attractions there are several free activities that should be planned for a full experience (in our opinion):
- Walk on the Wall Street
- Wander and enjoy Central Park and possibly take a carriage ride
- Stroll 5th Avenue
- Walk the High Line
- Check out St. Patrick’s cathedral
- Grand Central Train station (go to the grand concourse – it has 44 platforms!)
- take subway to Brooklyn and take a picture of Dumbo (down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass))
- Go to Chelsea Market for lunch
Suggestions
We would advise you to take small bags when you attend the attractions, because most do not allow big bags/backpacks.
There are some free attractions that we decided to group with the paid attractions like museums and observation decks. So, for example you can visit the One World Trade Center (9/11 Memorial Plaza and 9/11 Memorial museum), then visit the Oculus, walk down the Wall Street, take Staten Island Ferry (takes about 1 hour round trip), then go to Soho for some shopping.
Order tickets ahead for the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island. We did climb to the top of the Statue of Liberty, and yes it was quite some climbing up the narrow steps, but it was so exhilarating to accomplish that and take a picture of that moment. We did enjoy it! Some museums have free entrance days, so do check in advance and plan accordingly.
Additionally, make sure to wander Central Park, enjoy the business of the Times Square, have a snack in the Grand Central Market and admire the grand concourse that has 44 platforms and take a Dumbo picture under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass!
If you are a fan of Broadway and now that Broadway is back, do check out the TKTS booth for the discounted tickets. It was an awesome way to see different Broadway shows!
