Family Travel to Rome, Italy

Family travel destination of all time is Rome, Italy. Gelato, Vatican, Colosseum, Museums, Trevi Countain, Pizza... should we say more?

Itinerary

We were in Rome for 10 days and it took us all those days to visit the attractions while enjoying the city, cuisine, and culture. We got tickets to Colosseum, Borghese Gallery and Vatican ahead of time, because they sell out quickly. Our list of attractions included Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, Borghese Gallery, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Museums, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Campo de’Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and the Mouth of Truth!

Take your time when exploring the city. Plan for a full day for the Vatican City and Sistine Chapel, it is a lot of walking and trust me, you will be exhausted at the end of the day. Borghese Gallery is surrounded by a beautiful park. So before and after you visit the gallery, take your time in the park, fill up your water bottle from the nasoni (water fountains they have throughout the city with really clean and crisp water), hydrate and enjoy the surroundings.

Gluten-Free Traveling Trio Family in Rome trying yummy fruit fresh from the market

Food

It is very fun and delicious to browse food markets in Rome. Some of the markets that we visited were Campo de’Fiori and Campagna Amica Market. You can get some olives, fruit, cheese, meat; everything looks so delicious and fresh! It is so much fun to walk the streets like a local, go to the grocery store and browse fresh produce, then walk to different Piazzas, look at the fountains and throw a coin wishing to come back and see this beautiful place again. We had some favorite places to eat and to some we came back several times.

The weather was warm, and we made it our mission to go to Fatamorgana during lunch time for a “well deserved” (we did walk a LOT!) ice cream. Fatamorgana gelateria is very natural and each flavor is clearly identified with the ingredients so you can make allergy friendly selections. Grom gelaterias are also frequent in the city and we did visit those as well (only if Fatamorgana was out of the way). Both of them have gluten free ice-cream cones!

Pizza near the Trevi fountain was superb! First of all it is located right by the Trevi fountain, so we would stop by the fountain, enjoy the view, throw a coin, then go for pizza. We would frequently be really hungry by dinner, so we would each order a pizza (we all put whatever toppings we wanted). After pizza we enjoyed the gluten free tiramisu. It is amazing, unbelievable, breathtaking! We highly recommend it and once we are back, that might be our first choice for dinner!

Another place that we frequented a few times was Pantha Rei. It is a very popular place and you should make a reservation ahead of time, because they do get busy. Their menu is amazing because they can prepare anything on the menu gluten free for an additional fee. We loved it and we had pasta dishes and seafood. For lunch we stopped by Ciao Checca, they have a wide variety of gluten free dishes, everything was very delicious.

Accommodations

For accommodations we used VRBO and rented an apartment in the center of the city that had a full kitchen, air conditioning, 2 bedrooms, a full bath (Property ID: 864354ha). We highly recommend getting an apartment because you can do laundry and have snacks in the refrigerator or make yourself a big cup of coffee.
